Green Pricing Programs
Utility green pricing programs are utility programs that allow retail customers to purchase renewable energy to match their electricity usage on a partial or total basis. By subscribing to these programs, customers who wish to match all or some of their electricity usage can encourage utilities to purchase or produce additional amounts of renewable energy, thereby providing an additional driver for renewable energy / wind power development and allowing customers to make a difference in how their electricity is generated, by matching renewable energy or RECs to their usage.
Utilities benefit greatly from these green pricing programs by allowing customers to have a say in how their electricity is generated, by running these programs at a "financially breakeven" point in terms of the program economics, and by gathering positive perceptions and enhanced customer satisfaction. And studies have shown that enhanced customer satisfaction is felt not only by the customers who participate in the program, but as studies have indicated, they enjoy enhanced customer perceptions and satisfaction from customers who are aware of such programs and choose not to participate.
Utility green pricing programs are often certified to the "Green-e" standard by the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) to the highest levels of integrity and meeting strict requirements to ensure these programs meet the highest levels of how such programs are maintained and marketed. See those links to the right for more information.
