ADVISORY: OHIO GOVERNOR TED STRICKLAND TO ADDRESS AWEA WIND POWER SUPPLY CHAIN WORKSHOP
Sold-Out Workshop Signals High Hopes in Wind Power
For Business Opportunity, Job Creation
What: Toll-free National Call-in Press Conference with Ohio Governor Ted Strickland
Who: The Honorable Ted Strickland, Governor of Ohio; AWEA Director of Membership Services Britt Theismann
When: Tuesday, December 9, 2008, 12:15PM EST
Where: AWEA Wind Power Supply Chain Workshop, Cleveland, Ohio (**Important: see note below**)
Call-in number for reporters: 866-412-1090, conference id: 76597545
Furthermore: The Honorable Jon Husted, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, will address the workshop on Monday, December 8, 2008, at 5:15PM, and will be available to reporters (in person only) following his speech.
Why: In welcome news for the economy, the wind power industry is planning for growth and seeking to expand its manufacturing base in the U.S., creating jobs and business opportunity even in the face of the current downturn. The following figures illustrate the current growth and high level of expectations:
- 8,000: the number of components in a modern wind turbine, ranging from steel towers and high-tech composites for blades, to gearboxes, bearings, electrical wiring, power electronics, and more;
- $1.3-1.5 billion: anticipated investments in Ohio prior to 2012 in wind turbine installations resulting from Ohio’s new Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) passed in April of this year with the strong support of Governor Strickland and Speaker Husted;
- $15 billion: nationwide wind energy installation investment in 2008 (preliminary AWEA estimate based on 7,500 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity expected to be completed in 2008);
- 9,000: the number of jobs being created from recent wind turbine component manufacturing facility openings and announcements (first through third quarters of 2008);
- 60,000: the number of jobs in wind power today;
- 50%: the share of domestically manufactured wind turbine components today—up from 30% in 2005;
- 800 and 250 respectively: the number of attendees for the sold-out Wind Power Supply Chain Workshop in Cleveland, and the number on the waiting list to attend the workshop.
"The convenient truth is that wind power shines as a stimulus solution for our economy, as well as a climate change and energy security solution,” said AWEA Director of Membership Services Britt Theismann. “Businesses are literally lining up in order to learn about wind power and secure contracts in the wind energy industry supply chain. It will be critical now for the new Administration and for states to put in place effective incentives and a long-term policy for renewable energy to sustain this tremendously promising momentum."

(*!) Note: Due to the overwhelming response to this workshop, AWEA will be taking exceptional steps to accommodate the tremendous turnout. We are trying to accommodate both attendees and reporters as best as we can. For on-site reporters, we will not be able to provide access to the session hall (there won’t even be standing room). However, the press room will be equipped with a closed circuit television that will feed live, in real time, all the presentations and speeches from the session in the main hall. On-site reporters will therefore be able to follow the presentations just as if they were in the main session. In addition, Governor Strickland and Speaker Husted will be in person in the press room for the media availabilities. We will also assist in arranging interviews with other speakers in the press room and during breaks as desired.
AWEA is the national trade association of America’s wind industry, with more than 1,600 member companies, including global leaders in wind power and energy development, wind turbine manufacturing, component and service suppliers, and the world’s largest wind power trade show. AWEA is the voice of wind energy in the U.S., promoting renewable energy to power a cleaner, stronger America. More information on wind energy is available at the AWEA Web site: www.awea.org.
