How do I Get Involved?

The best approach to making the most of your membership in AWEA is to become involved in the Association in as many ways as possible. Here are some of the most effective ways to become involved:

Committees and Working Groups

If your company is a Member at the Corporate / Utility level, you are eligible to participate in AWEA’s Working Groups and Committees*

AWEA Committees and Working Groups are communities of individuals who share a professional interest in a specific wind topic. For example, there is a Safety Committee, Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Committee, Siting Committee, Utility Working Group, Education Working Group, Human Resources (HR) Working Group and more. Within these groups you are able to effectively and efficiently network with your peers, share best practices and discuss issues specific to your niche in the industry.

*This does not apply to AWEA’s Transmission and Legislative Committees. For more information on eligibility and participation in these two Committees, please contact Amna Khan at akhan@awea.org.

eCommunities

As a participant in AWEA’s Committees and Working Groups, you are also eligible to participate in AWEA’s eCommunities. You can subscribe to an eCommunity inside of the Member Center once you have been added to a Committee / Working Group roster. To be added to a Committee / Working Group roster, please contact the appropriate staff liaison listed in our Plug Into AWEA document.

Because Committees and Working Groups are only able to meet in person once or twice a year, eCommunities are an effective way for these groups to stay in touch and continue discussion year-round. eCommunities operate like listservs and can be setup to send daily, weekly or monthly digests of content from the group.

Networking and Educational Events

Throughout the course of the year, AWEA holds many workshops and events. We also regularly conducts seminars at the Power-Gen Conference, Electric Power Conference, the EWEA Annual Conference & Exhibition and numerous other regional and local programs.

The two largest AWEA events held annually are the Fall Symposium and WINDPOWER® Conference & Exhibition – the largest wind conference in the world. Aside from these events there are 11 workshops (on average) during the year that focus on specific topics such as Siting, Finance, Asset Management, Safety, and many more.

AWEA’s WINDPOWER® Conference & Exhibition is a prime opportunity for networking with wind industry professionals, displaying your company’s products and services and becoming educated on the latest in the U.S. wind energy market. Each year the conference gathers more than 23,000 wind energy professionals for 3 days of seminars and workshops covering a full range of topics from the basics of wind power to in-depth discussions of technology, regulatory and political issues, market developments, environmental issues and project financing, and more. WINDPOWER’s Exhibition features over 1100 Member companies showcasing the latest in technology, products and services.

Members also participate in planning and advisory committees related to WINDPOWER and other conferences and seminars, enjoy discounted rates on registration fees and exhibition costs, have the opportunity to speak and present at WINDPOWER and other events… all by joining AWEA.

View a list of upcoming Events and Workshops.

If you are unable to attend an AWEA Event or want to catch up on a session you missed, the majority of our workshops are recorded and the CD / DVD ROMs and workshop materials are available in our AWEA Store . Members of AWEA receive a 20% discount on all items.

Communication and Information

AWEA provides the most reliable data on the modern wind industry. We are the source for accurate, up-to-date information on wind power markets, trends and technology. We also house a large selection of industry publications, and support association members with their wind energy information and communication needs.

Get AWEA’s Wind Energy Weekly for up-to-date market information, late-breaking legislative, economic, and environmental developments affecting wind, and wind energy news you will not find anywhere else.

Subscribe to AWEA’s WindLetter for a recap of the month's most significant wind energy news. This publication includes interesting information for wind energy enthusiasts, including articles on small wind systems by Mick Sagrillo and feature articles by AWEA Staff members.

Our Projects Database includes wind power project sites that are currently in operation or are under construction. Information is primarily from AWEA member companies and is updated on a weekly basis. AWEA business members interested in learning more about projects earlier in the development process, can access a special projects site through the Members Only section of the AWEA web site.

Visit AWEA’s Newsroom to access News Releases and Statements, Video Clips, articles published highlighting AWEA and our Members. Legislative Action and Grassroots Programs

Help wind energy by becoming an advocate in Congress on wind energy issues. We can help arrange meetings with your representatives in the House and Senate. We have a variety of programs to help you promote legislation supportive to the growth of wind energy.

As various bills and political issues related to energy legislation arise throughout the year, we will ask you to “Take Action.” Register for AWEA’s Take Action Alerts and during we will email you a link to AWEA’s Legislative Action website, providing you with the tools necessary to quickly and easily contact your elected officials with a personalized message.

WindPAC

WindPAC is the Political Action Committee (PAC) of the American Wind Energy Association. Because federal election campaign laws prohibit trade associations from using their general treasury funds to make contributions to federal elections, WindPAC makes political contributions to candidates for federal office using personal, non-corporate funds contributed by individuals of member companies.

AWEA members can support WindPAC by contributing between $100 and $5,000. These contributions are used to help elect candidates to the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate who understand the wind industry, share our concerns, and listen to our views on the issues that affect us.

For more information, please visit AWEA’s WindPAC website.

AWEA’s Policy Agenda

AWEA’s industry agenda is to achieve 20% of electricity from wind by 2030. In order to accomplish this, AWEA believes six key national policies need to be enacted:

  • National Renewable Electricity Standard (RES)
A 25% renewable electricity by 2025 standard, with a near-term target such as the 10% by 2012 objective called for in the Obama-Biden New Energy for America plan
  • Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit (PTC)
A long-term extension to ensure policy stability for the first time.
  • New Interstate Transmission Highways for Renewable Energy
Legislation and initiatives to develop a high-voltage interstate transmission
highway system, called the Green Power Superhighways, for renewable energy.
  • National Climate Change Legislation
A cap-and-trade system calling for a 15% to 20% carbon dioxide reduction by 2020 to promote a near-term shift to renewable energy and emissions reductions.
  • Federal Agency Support for Siting Wind Power Projects and Transmission Lines
Prioritize responsibly-sited renewable energy development on federal lands and
    create streamlined, timely review processes.
  • Federal Research & Development (R&D) and Program Funding
Increase the annual funding level for wind R&D and other programs to $217
million over the course of the next three to five years.

Both DOE’s 20% Report as well as AWEA’s full report on Wind Energy for a New Era are available on AWEA’s Wind Energy for a New Era website
