Legislative Committee

AWEA’s Legislative Committee focuses on policy, tax and regulatory issues, with the objectives of opening new markets for wind energy and improving the industry’s ability to serve those markets. This requires a broad-based effort, on behalf of a variety of innovative state, regional and national policies.

AWEA's Legislative Efforts are funded separately, outside of membership dues.

More than a decade ago, the AWEA Board of Directors recognized that the Association’s dues base was insufficient to provide the financial support necessary for an effective professional legislative capability. The Board established AWEA’s Legislative Committee as a means of providing the financial support and policy guidance necessary for a strong legislative program. Members of the Legislative Committee provide voluntary contributions above and beyond their dues levels as a means of ensuring that the Association is able to hire well-qualified legislative staff and consultants.

Members of AWEA’s Legislative Committee meet separately, and in conjunction with the meetings of the AWEA Board of Directors. These meetings provide members with thorough reviews of the association’s policy objectives and efforts, and offer members the opportunity to offer their own perspectives on the industry’s needs. During times of more intense legislative activity, regular conference calls are held, so that the AWEA staff and members can share information on a timely basis.

As a Legislative Committee member you will receive:

1. A seat at the table. Committee members can participate directly in the decision making process.

2. Detailed e-mail updates on legislative issues. Get the latest information from AWEA legislative staff regarding the status of the association’s various objectives. These can be helpful to members in their own business planning processes. These updates also offer members the information upon which they can act, for example to communicate directly with their own legislative representatives. Such communication is the most effective way to impress upon policymakers the value of their support for wind energy.

3. Greater access to the legislative staff. The legislative staff is available to answer questions and address any concerns committee members have about legislative issues.
