Sarah Howell

Sarah Howell is the VP, Public Affairs for the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), the national trade association of approximately 2000 entities involved in all aspects of wind energy production. In this role she is responsible for providing executive leadership and management to the public relations initiatives of AWEA in order to effectively communicate the organization’s mission, priorities, achievements and activities to all relevant stakeholders. She also provides management and oversight to both short- and long-term planning for all campaigns, outreach, publications, speeches, news releases and other communications initiatives.
Sarah joined AWEA in the Fall of 2009. Prior to joining AWEA, she served as Director of Environmental and Corporate Communications for BP America managing environmental positioning and messaging to external and media audiences. Before her years at BP America, she was deputy director of external affairs for BP Solar.
Ms. Howell is a board member of the Women’s Network for a Sustainable Future and serves on the professional advisory board of the National Environmental Education Foundation. She is a member of the Washington DC-based Women’s Council on Energy and the Environment, the Public Relations Society of America, and is a member of the National Press Club.
Ms. Howell received her B.S. degrees in Political Science and French from Randolph-Macon College in Virginia and performed graduate studies at the Université de Technologie de Compiègne in Compiègne, France. She is married and resides in Washington DC.

Tom Gray joined AWEA in 1980 and became Executive Director in 1981. He left AWEA in 1989 and rejoined the staff in 1994. He previously worked as a newspaper reporter and as a legislative assistant to the Michigan State Senate and to a U.S. Congressman. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Haverford (Pa.) College and a Juris Doctor degree from Catholic University of America. In 2003, he was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Powering America program as a "Wind Energy Pioneer" for his work with AWEA.

Christine Real de Azua joined the American Wind Energy Association in 1999. She is the association's assistant director for communications. Christine works on media and stakeholder outreach to increase the general public and decision-makers' awareness of, and interest in, wind energy. Prior to joining AWEA, Christine launched and directed Accounting for the Environment, a non-profit policy and advocacy project. She also has extensive editorial experience, including working as assistant editor for World Press Review magazine and One World, an international publication on development issues carried by major dailies in several countries. Real de Azua holds a degree from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques, in Paris, France, and a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania.
Anyah Dembling

Anyah Dembling joined the AWEA Communications team in March 2009 to support advocacy and outreach activities. Anyah first worked with renewable energy while involved in student government at GW, when she lobbied the University to purchase wind energy for its student center in 2004. Since then, she worked as an intern at the State Department Office of the Chief of Protocol and as a Public Information Assistant at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Office of External Affairs. In 2006, she received a B.A. in International Affairs with a concentration in Conflict Resolution from the George Washington University.

Carl has worked as a journalist in both the energy industry, as a staff writer for Public Utilities Fortnightly magazine, and the association sector, as senior editor at Association Management magazine. He also has covered the home-building industry, where his areas of greatest interest were sustainable development and "smart growth," and has written articles for numerous other publications as a freelance writer. He received his B.A. from James Madison University.

Chris Madison joined AWEA in July 2008 as a senior writer. Previously he worked as a staff writer at National Journal, as a Capitol Hill press secretary and speechwriter, and as a communications professional for nonprofit organizations. He has a B.A. in English and an MS in Journalism from Northwestern University.
